Good design: Geni signup form

Geni is the 2.0 equivalent of a family tree. It allows users to create and share a tree with their family members.

Geni: Signup form

Geni’s homepage does everything right. It engages users through a contextualized signup form, states the Website’s mission and summarizes the options, builds credibility and reduces concerns with privacy. Fun and efficient, the visual flow (visual order of importance of page elements) is perfect.

The rest of the Website is also worth checking out.

Bad design: Facebook search

Facebook has been busy fixing bugs with the new design. They have added, removed and changed several options in response to the feedback they’ve been receiving.

Facebook: Search the Web
After logging in

Although they are going in the right direction, I’m wondering why anyone would want to search the Web from Facebook? This comment could apply to several other sites adding useless search options cluttering and complicating the design. This is increasingly true with the growing popularity of browsers with integrated search boxes and Google Chrome’s one-field approach.

Don’t complicate things if you don’t have to.

Interesting design: AOL resizing

Granted, AOL is not what it used to be. However, it’s new portal has some interesting features.

AOL: Resizing

Maybe the layout choices shouldn’t be limited to fixed or fluid designs. AOL allows users to change the width of the layout IF they feel constrained or wish to reduce horizontal eye movement when reading. Interesting option for content Websites.
